Freshen Your Drink: Taittinger Brut Reserve NV

Some champagnes have a high level of rotation on the cellar shelves, due to popularity.

Due to this, we re-test some big house Brut NV’s each year to ensure that our scoring is based on what you can buy now.

We call this “freshening your drink” and our scoreboard reflects the latest and greatest bottles you can find on the shelf.

We first scored the Taittinger Brut Reserve NV almost way back at the start of!  We found it to be a refreshing drop, which punched pretty high in weight despite a $50 price tag.

Our notes were that the Taittinger delivered nice slight honey and toast flavours and a clean, crisp fruity palate. It was well balanced with no overpowering dryness, and the flavour remains on the tongue for a medium length.

Fast forward 2 years and we have enjoyed quite a few champagnes in between and it’s time to revisit this great family owned house’s standard fare. Has the impressive flavour been upheld?

Score & Verdict:

Can’t help but feel a little disappointed here. The smell is now crisp and fruity over fungal and yeasty. Also gone in the first sip are the stronger notes of honey; although a nice clean and precise zippy citric tang is delivered and makes it very refreshing. It floats on for a while.

The final finish makes the taste round off to become a little bitter on the back sides of the tongue, leaving a little to be desired. Not as strong as previously but still an enjoyable champagne.
